Storm Center - Guide to Emergency Preparedness and Evacuations
Be sure to review the hurricane preparedness advice below.

Be Prepared for a Hurricane - Checklist

The Atlantic Coast hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30, however, we are most vulnerable from mid-August to early November. Click here for a checklist of some steps you should take, and items you should have available even before a hurricane watch or warning is announced:

Be Prepared to Evacuate & Secure Your Home - Make A Plan

In the event of an evacuation,  Emergency Vehicles will also notify residents via loudspeakers.

Village residents will be instructed to leave their homes 18 hours prior to landfall of a storm.  This is essential.  Please remember that Island Park and the Loop Parkway are at lower elevations and will flood hours earlier than the barrier island.

RELOCATE OR STAY WITH FRIENDS OR RELATIVES (NORTH OF SUNRISE HIGHWAY) Be sure that their home is adequately prepared and supplied. Have a back up plan in case they are out of town. Be sure to leave early to avoid heavy traffic roads blocked by floodwaters.

GO TO A RED CROSS SHELTER Red Cross Hurricane Shelters are available and will be announced on radio and television 36 hours prior to anticipated hurricane landfall. Be sure to go to a shelter as soon as it opens if you intend to seek refuge there. Accommodations are minimal.

Click here for a checklist of items to bring when you leave your house.

Be Ready When A Hurricane Threatens Our Area

Ø Prepare early. Pay attention to official announcements on radio and television from the National Hurricane Center and local officials. DO NOT pay attention to rumors.

Ø Be ready to evacuate 18 hours before the storm is expected to hit. Pre-storm tides and flooding will cut you off if you don’t leave soon enough.

Ø You may be advised to evacuate while the weather looks nice. Please do so. Rapidly deteriorating weather conditions will make evacuation hazardous as the storm approaches.

ØWith few exceptions, everyone living on the island of Atlantic Beach should evacuate in ANY hurricane.

Public Shelters

Nassau Community College has been identified as a pre-designated Red Cross Shelter. Other locations will be announced 36 hours before storm impact.
